Matale is located 142 kilometers from Colombo. It is known for the Aluvihara Temple where the Pali Canon was first written down completely in text on ola (palm) leaves. Matale was also the site of a major battle in 1848 when the Matale Rebellion erupted and the British garrison in Fort Macdowall was placed under siege by the rebels led by Weera Puran Appu and Gongalegoda Banda, who are considered as national heroes.

This Historical city was also home to Monarawila Keppetipola, another national hero who led the Wellasa rebellion against the British. His ancestral home, the Kappetipola Walauwa still exists at Hulangamuwa, Matale. Christ Church, Matale, which was built in 1860, is also another attraction.

Nokia Maps is a popular mobile application developed by Nokia Corporation, a Finnish multinational communications and information technology company.
